For Mothers & Midwives
Is Birth Story Listening your missing link?
Here's what others had to say about their experience...
"As a midwife, my mind is full of birth stories so I was curious about what Birth Story Listening would be like... I feel VERY fortunate to have had a Listening session with Allison. Allison is a natural; I think she was made for this work. She is intuitive and a natural listener. I felt safely guided through my session and was genuinely surprised to uncover and understand the sticky elements of the birth story I selected. I was able to identify unconscious feelings and beliefs that led to a much deeper understanding that allowed me to process in a way that I did not realize I needed. The session was very cathartic. I highly recommend a Birth Story Listening session with Allison. Whether you are working with your own birth story or you are a birth worker - Allison will enable you to gain a level of peace, understanding and closure that you didn't realize you needed. "
-Cassie, Midwife & Mother of 2
"Allison has an exceptional ability of being able to firstly make you feel safe and comfortable. Her genuinely kind personality and thoughtful words helped me gently tease out a seemingly insignificant moment, and guide me to pull on a thread of a story. With her unwavering support that thread unraveled a deep seeded limiting belief that had been unconsciously interwoven into so many parts of my life, beyond just the birth of my daughter, that I had no idea how intricately it was affecting my well-being and how I show up in the world. And she guided me through the process with the utmost care and respect. Her compassion and understanding made me feel fully seen and heard every part of the process. Honestly, I can't thank her enough for helping me see myself, the birth of my daughter and all the other pieces of my life with a new perspective and clarity. "
-Lisa, Mother of 2
"Meeting with Allison was the session I didn't know I needed. This experience was so different than the typical ‘debriefing’ we do as birth workers. I left with such a sense of peace around the birth we discussed, and a shift in how I was showing up for clients going forward. I draw on our discussion often and see so much value in this mode of therapy for birth workers. Allison is sunshine for the soul. "
-Savannah, Midwife
"The Birth Story Medicine experience with Allison was so fantastic. I was able to tell my birth story in a way that helped me see myself and my birth circumstances with more clarity and compassion. I came away with a renewed sense of my own strength and some affirmations and tools I can use moving forward."
-Anita, Mother of 2
From the time I was very young, I felt old inside.
Probably the first grown-up thought I remember having was "When I'm older, I want to be a Mum."
When I had finally grown and was "ready" for Motherhood (whatever that means ;-)), each path of learning I had followed had led me purposefully to that transitional moment, offering variations of the same wisdom:
Lean into discomfort.
Breathe.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
I thought I was well-versed in what it meant to do these things.
Then I underwent my first Motherhood initiation...through miscarriage.
Amidst the all-consuming waves of grief, I knew in my bones that this unfortunate beginning held a bigger purpose for my soul's growth on this path than I could comprehend.
So I leaned in.
Loss, then eventually giving birth to my own 3 children, as well as witnessing the births and postpartum journeys of Mothers as a Doula, has forever altered me. Motherhood has blasted open my heart, kicked my butt, dropped me unceremoniously into the shadowy swamps of my psyche and whisked me to the breath-taking-tear-jerking heights of no-holds-barred unconditional Love. It tests my mettle, stretches my heart in new unfamiliar directions, and continues to work its weird-ass magic on me every. single. day.
It would be my absolute honour to hold space for you and the story you may have pulled away from, but are ready to lean into.
I think you'll be surprised at what treasure awaits you to behold.

What is Birth Story Listening?
Birth Story Listening is a powerful tool for emotional recovery and self-discovery after childbirth (or through whichever means your personal initiation into motherhood unfolded). The process I will guide you through in our session is called the Birth Story Medicine Process. It was created by renowned childbirth educator, author, former nurse-midwife and counselling psychologist, Pam England. Even years out from a birth experience, women can find a supportive container within this process to reflect on their experiences and find healing and meaning in their birth stories.
Midwives can also deeply benefit from this process -- it is a safe and supportive place where space is given for their unique, personal perspectives and experiences after witnessing a challenging or traumatic birth. This process allows Midwives to work with their own personal, emotional journey separate from the more commonly shared medical story, and in so doing, find space to digest what may be lingering for them.
How can having my birth story listened to help me in Motherhood?
As a Mother myself who has navigated the ins and outs of struggle in Motherhood, and now as a Birth Story Listener/Mentor trained in Pam England's Birth Story Medicine Process, my eyes, ears and heart have been opened to the possibility that, in the daily quest to find even a sliver of inner spaciousness in the chaos and overwhelm of Motherhood, we are unknowingly holding onto a crucial key to a new layer of meaning and understanding within our stories and our Selves.
Our birth, pregnancy, conception, loss, abortion or postpartum stories -- the traumatic or unresolved stories, the stories that on paper, seemed fine but yet still continue to chew at us, the stories that we've told the same way to friends, family members or medical professionals, and even the stories we've withheld from telling -- carry more weight and hold more power over our present experience than we may realize. (That's probably why you're here reading this!) In Birth Story Listening, you will have the opportunity to be deeply heard and seen in your storylines of Birth, Postpartum, and Motherhood, to unlock new doors of understanding within yourself and to bring new meaning to your experiences as a way of digesting what you've been through. You'll also have the opportunity to identify helpful solutions to better carry the load of Motherhood (and indeed, Human-hood) with a much lighter touch.
What if my birth was fine and all went well in the end -- will this still help me?
Absolutely! Even the most "smooth-sailing" births have treasure to unearth. If you have at least one moment in your birth/postpartum experience that you come back to in your mind for some reason, or you frequently wonder "what was that all about?"-- then a birth story listening session would be a great place to explore this. Quite frequently, we've become so accustomed to defaulting to "everything worked out ok in the end" that we are missing some crucial pieces that come before that hold incredible potential for integration and/or transformation to take place.
How soon after birth can I book a session?
I really believe in Postpartum mothers at any stage being able to access support and be able to have their stories heard in a safe, compassionate container. You are welcome to book your session on the back end of your 4th trimester (6+ weeks postpartum), though it can be helpful to get a bit of extra distance from your birth experience before you explore it in a Birth Story Listening session. As far as I've witnessed, any lingering emotional attachment to an experience within your birth journey is actually a sign of a beautiful opportunity to explore what might be ready to shift within you.
If you're a Midwife, I'm here to process your experience with you as soon as you feel ready to do so.
How long is a session? And how much do they cost?
Sessions are typically 1 hour in length and are $100 CAD per session.
Do you do online sessions?
Yes! All sessions are online.
Is Birth Story Listening covered by my benefits?
I wish it were! If you have access to health spending funds through your work benefits, it might be worth exploring if your sessions would qualify as this is absolutely a great investment towards your personal well-being.
I had a miscarriage. Could a listening session hold benefit for a loss story as well?
Absolutely. A session to process the loss you've gone through, whether you have hopes of moving forward into a future pregnancy or not, would be very beneficial. I'm here for you. <3
I'm a Dad. Can I do a Birth Story Listening Session?
100%YES!
Here's what another open-minded Dad found:
"One doesn’t often think of a dad as part of any birth story aside from chief water-getter and hand-holder. I know I didn’t. I had no idea that there was even any story in it for me. But there was. And it wasn’t just a story, but a lens through which I suddenly learned new truths about what it means to be me. I learned what my subconscious was doing while I watched my spouse do the miraculous—create life. My session with Allison did something incredible and gave me clarity and language for things too deep to recognize on my own. All while I got to remember and relive the extraordinary thing it was to go from dude to dad. I can’t recommend working with her enough. There’s something important there for you, no matter who you are."
~ M, Author, Communications Consultant, Father of 2.
Can my kids be with me while I'm in my online session?
Mom to mom, I completely understand how hard it is to get time to yourself -- especially when your kiddos are very young. It is preferable, however, to have your kids' care covered while we are in our session so that you can really be present and focused on what is unfolding for you.
